Jay opens the door into a quiet back alley that could belong to any city - the lingering scent of garbage and the miss-matched colours where graffiti has been washed off or painted over. In the mid-afternoon chill of early spring, he takes Emcee's hand and leads him out into the street, pocketing the key. The sunlight is thin but warm and picks out the green swell of buds in the branches. The tree lined avenue is quiet this time of day. Not lacking in people but without rush, a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Emcee follows Jay into the main living space but hangs back around the kitchen. However, he is surprised to see the page boy. And his eyes widen when he sees how he's treating him.

He comes out from around the kitchen counter.

"Jay, what are you doing?"

Emcee is about to tell Jay to let him go, but then he notices-- well. He arches an eyebrow at the boy, and crosses his arms.

"I see..."

He's not getting involved.

"Poor form, Sebastian. You should have waited."

Or maybe he knew he was going to get worked over. In any case, Emcee turns around and drifts back toward the kitchen.

Emcee is examining the contents of the wallet Jay gave him, shuffling through the various cards.

"Oh, was it?" he says, eyebrows raised. "Well, good for him. There was a moment there where I was going to call you off."

He smirks a little and waves a hand, shaking his head.

"No, of course not. Just that the boy was drunk and I thought you were only giving him a scare or something, that's all."

Picking a business card (a local dry cleaner's) out of the wallet, he slips it into his back trouser pocket. And then he sort of hesitates about the rest. Especially the money.

"Jesus," he says in a low, half-snicker. "At least some sense of self-preservation can be a good thing."

Finally, Emcee decides on taking the money with him, but not the credit or bank cards.

"If I exchange this at the bar for 1934 Marks, I would be fucking rich."

He furrows his brow. "I can see how letting him out of your protective circle concerns you. And it is Paris, after all. I can't imagine it changing all that much from when I knew it."

Folding up the wallet still containing his new ID and other cards, he holds it out to Jay.

"Would you please keep this safe for me? As well as the key. I don't expect to need this much money back home, but I can keep it at the bar and pay off some of my tab and not rely on yours and Eric's so frequently."

"Yes, that is Paris all right," he says wryly. "But it's good to start off in a new city knowing a few people. And perhaps he'll find the right kind of inspiration for his art."

He steps closer to Jay and runs a hand down the back of his neck, and then leans down to plant a kiss on the top of his head.

"Thank you."

Emcee kisses back, warm and sweet and forgiving. He can't stay mad at Jay for long, and it's not in him to be unnecessarily petty. Jay more than makes up for fucking up.

"Well, by the time you get in, I will probably be passed out in bed. But I'll leave you a key and you can pass out with me."

He picks up his coat, plus the shoebox filled with forgotten memories from the Kit Kat Klub.

"Sounds lovely."

Has it almost been twenty-four hours since Emcee first set foot in the new Berlin? He smiles faintly at the absurd thought, as he casts a thorough look around the room. Just to ground himself in the idea that he can come back to this. That this can be his life.

"I'll see you later, darling," he murmurs as he strokes the back of Jay's head, running his fingers through his hair, his touch affectionate.

He then moves off, crossing the room toward the front door. A simple choice to find a doorway to Milliways, isn't it? He places a hand on the knob and turns--

Funny. It actually worked.

With a little wave at Jay over his shoulder, he steps through and shuts the door behind him.
